About the Event
The Paulding County Genealogical Society is offering a workshop for its monthly program on Saturday, May 6 at 10 am at the Dallas Public Library. Anyone interested in starting his or her own family history or in adding new information from original records is invited to bring a laptop or personal device to begin a family file that morning, “on the spot.”
Speakers will introduce how to find original records on free websites and how to connect the documents to selected ancestors. Part of the program time will be set aside as a workshop to help people get started on their own research.
Shelly Sidhu, a volunteer who serves as the Social Media Director of the Paulding County Genealogical Society, will show how access to free online records helped shed light on the 19th century murder of Asa Hendrick and gave new information to descendants of the victim.
Marilyn Cranford, a local family history consultant and a former director of the Powder Springs Family History Center, will demonstrate basic navigation of free websites such as FamilySearch.org and how to access original historic records.
Then audience members will have time to explore these sites and find their own ancestors while the speakers provide individual assistance.
“Preserving the histories of local families is one of the purposes of the PCGS,” according to President Frederick Henderson. “We hope that people get a good start on documenting their family information and that they’ll consider allowing the PCGS to preserve their family records, photos, and stories.”
“On the Spot” will be Saturday, May 6, at 10 am at the Dallas Public Library. Interested community members are welcome to bring a laptop and start their own family history using the library’s free Wi-Fi. More information can be found at pcresearchlibrary.com or by calling 404 435-4648. The Paulding County Genealogical Society Research Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 3 pm at 160 Confederate Avenue, Dallas.
